Hammocks are one of the best ways to add a fun, and relaxing area to any outdoor space from a campground to your own backyard. They’ve become an essential item to pack when we go camping, and they’re easily the most sought after seat in camp.
Our family has tried out more hammocks than I can even remember over the last several years. Some we love, and others we don’t keep for long. Our favorites have a permanant place in our backyard when the weather’s good and get used DAILY! While it sounded frivolous at first, we’ve come to absolutley LOVE kid sized hammocks for younger kids.
A kids sized hammock makes kids feel more secure, is more comfortable, and is a funa nd personalized way to get kids excited about spending more time outside.
If the idea of getting a hammock for your kids appeals to you, you’re in the right place! Here’s everything you need to know about kid’s hammocks and what some of the best product options are for you to buy on the market.
Types Of Hammock Material:
When you’re in the market for a children’s hammock, the material plays an important role in the overall performance of the hammock. It determines the durability, comfort, and sustainability of the item so you’d naturally want to consider what kind of material your hammock is made of.
Before we go into the details of the material, you need to also consider the type of build the material has. Is it a fabric kind or the rope kind? The rope kind has the fabric is woven in an open weave pattern, the way traditional hammocks are. The fabric is just how the name explains it, a piece of fabric cut out to be a hammock.
Now let’s look at each material in a little more detail.
Nylon makes some of the most durable hammocks out there but it’s sadly more expensive compared to materials like polyester or cotton. It’s usually used for hammocks that are made to last long such as camping hammocks.
However, nylon absorbs a lot of water. So if you leave it out in the rain, it’s going to take forever to dry up. So look for one that has some kind of weather coating on it to make it more resilient and weather-resistant.
Parachute Nylon Hammocks
Parachute nylon is a more refined version of nylon. It’s smoother and shinier, but also more expensive. But it’s a popular material since it’s lightweight, can be folded into a compact size, and has a quick-drying effect.
You’ll find parachute nylon as the base material for a lot of travel-purpose hammocks or camping hammocks since they’re travel-friendly and weather resistant. We have several hammocks made of parachute nylon that we keep outside for about 6 months each year, and they are doing great 3 years later.
Canvas is a type of cotton material with PVC mixed into it so it gives regular cotton more quality to make it more durable. Canvas is pretty insulating so you can rely on it to keep you cool on warm days and vice versa.
They hold colors well which makes them vibrant, a feature kids would love! The only downside to canvas hammocks is that they absorb a lot of water so you can’t leave them out on rainy days or they won’t last too long.
Polyester is cheaper than nylon but is more weather resistant and durable compared to cotton. It’s easy to care for, and dries up quickly so it doesn’t accumulate mold all that often.
However, it does absorb oil from your skin and the surroundings so, over time, it can get a weird greasy touch to it and may also develop some kind of odor. Another downside to polyester is that it’s not very comfortable since it’s a little stiff.
Kids Hammocks Vs Adult Hammocks
At first glance, both kids’ and adult hammocks are basically the same. However, since kids’ hammocks are built especially for them, they are smaller and can fit into narrower areas. They’re also built with lesser weight capacity in mind so they’re not as strong and weight-bearing as adult hammocks are.
So why would you buy a kids size hammock instead of an adult hammock?
- Limited space – kids hammocks are much shorter and can fit into shorter spaces
- Shorter hammocks are easier for kids to sleep in
- Kids hammocks pack down smaller and are lighter so they’re perfect for camping with kids
How To Attach a Hammock To a Tree
Here are the different ways you can attach your kid’s hammock to the tree:
This is by far the easiest way to put up a hammock just about anywhere and also the most adjustable. You can install the hammock using straps by first installing a couple of sturdy trees or hammock posts. Then simply attach it to the straps, adjust them to the right height and tension, and you’re good to go!
Eyelets or Carabiners
Drill a hole into two trees 8-9 feet apart, and screw in your fishhook or eyelet into the holes on both trees. Then clip your hammocks to the hooks or eyelets using carabiners
A rope is how you see most hammocks are installed, it’s sturdy and reliable. Put your rope through the holes on your hammock and then securely tie it to two trees.
Extra Hammock Features To Look For:
Being outdoors is great until you hear the bugs buzzing around you and biting you randomly. This is something that the kids can be especially sensitive to! So when you’re buying a hammock for kids, you can always look for one with a built-in bug net to keep them away.
Some children’s hammocks come with a built-in rainfly to keep your hammocks protected from the rain. This is especially helpful if you are planning on doing some hammock camping with kids.
Constant sunlight can be pretty damaging for both you and your hammock. Having a hammock with a shade cover will protect your kid from the dangers of constant direct exposure to the sun and also keep your hammock from withering away.
